I will be in town taking care of a few customers, visiting with old friends and accepting new patients.Smiling Horse Equine Dentistry Dave Gibson Eq.D.T. |
Ft Myers (S.W. Florida)
Description: * Is now accepting new patients in your area * we offer free exams, routine and advanced dental procedures on sedated and un-sedated horses
**Here are a few important things to remember : 1) To ensure deciduous caps (baby teeth) are shed properly, horses under the age of 5 years old should be examined every 6 months. A retained cap can cause overcrowding issues and serious dental problems down the road. 2) Horses with malocclusions (dental abnormalities) should be worked on approximately every 8 months, until normal occlusion is reached. 3) Horses with otherwise normal mouths need to be examined and floated annually. .) Probably the most common question I get is Dave why does my horse need a dentist ? A.) There are quite a few answers to that question. Health, Comfort, and Savings just to name a few . 1.) HEALTH - 85-95 % of all health issues in horses originate in the mouth, such as infections that can spread to the heart and other major organs causing sometimes fatal results. There is also an increased risk of colic (eating grain off the ground is not good at all, and is a major cause of colic). Lack of regular dental care can also result in a painful joint condition much like humans get called TMJ syndrome. Since a horse can chew from 15,000-50,000 times per day ,maintaining the health of this joint is a key to owning and training a happy , healthy ,and well behaved horse. 2.) COMFORT - Horses that are not comfortable with the bit ,or lack anterior-posterior movement, will not perform to their maximum potential, and can develop behavior problems. Most of which can be prevented or corrected. 3.) $$ SAVINGS - Savings will come in a number of ways. Horses with maintained mouths will drop less feed (reduced risk of colic),and will utilize properly masticated food and its nutrients more efficiently, greatly increasing your ability to keep weight on older horses ,and the rest of the herd in the winter the months. So less dropped food = no colic = lower feed and lower Vet bills. **Large barn, 4-H, and other discounts are also available** Q.) The other big question I get is Dave why not just have my vet do my horses teeth ? A.) The truth is most of them dont like to do it. Its hard, dirty, dangerous work, and unless your vet attended a specialized equine dental school (most universities only require about 10 hrs on the equine mouth), chances are your horse will receive sub-standard work. I work largely unsedated have almost no over head ( not to mention I am not trying to sell sedation, blood work, wormers etc.). I am also very reasonable with my farm call rates, and am always willing to split the farm call with fellow horse owners in your neighborhood. Im not doing this to get rich just to help horses and their owners enjoy a peaceful life together. If you know of a horse rescue in need of a donation of services or if you have any questions please feel free to call or pass this along. |

Will travel reasonable distance. Starting my own business sheath cleaning, I have noticed a lot of people do not want to do it or don't know how. I charge half of what the vet's charge to come out, in this economy who wants to spend $115 for them to come out and clean vs $20-40 depending on distance and time between cleanings ex) hasn't been cleaned in years, that will be more than the minimum price because it is VERY time consuming. I have many references available if you would like to do a reference check. SERIOUS INQUIRIES ONLY PLEASE. Nicole or email me I am available 7 days a week, feel free to call anytime with any questions! |

*Not all horses are capable of "working" or remaining serviceably sound barefoot. It is not "natural" to ride horses, work horses in harness, work horses on pavement, jump horses, or do the many activities we do with our equine partners. When a horse is doing something "un-natural", it may need the dedicated and educated help of speciliazed shoeing from a professional farrier and veterinarian to maintain a happy and "sound" life. |
