Because of the lack of controversy, most Congressmen and > Senators were simply unaware of the entire program! Our efforts to stop > the federal funding for NAIS this summer succeeded in creating a > controversy that made many members of Congress aware of the issue for the > first time. We have heard growing numbers express opposition to NAIS. > > But while we succeeded in creating greater awareness and opposition to > NAIS, it appears that the federal government will continue its funding of > NAIS in the upcoming year. The Senate Appropriations Committee is not > waiting for a GAO analysis, but has already reported the appropriations > bill to the Senate. It would be > almost impossible to pull the funding out of the Appropriations bill at > this point. > > We have multiple opportunities in the coming months to fight NAIS. We > will monitor the USDA's proposal of a plan to the House, and oppose the > release of the funds. The GAO report, whenever it is published, may > provide very helpful ammunition in this fight. And we will continue to > educate the public and legislators in every state, encouraging them to > refuse the offer of federal funds to implement NAIS at the state level. > We will also prepare legislation to propose in the next year to stop the > federal funding and implementation of a mandatory NAIS. > > The fight to stop NAIS will not be won or lost overnight.
